Bohdan Zadura

The Molehill

Humour, especially involving language, is a weapon that Bohdan Zadura loves using, but his book, The Molehill, is a collection of deeply committed poems, in two senses. At first lots of bluntly treated bits and pieces from our socio-political reality leap out of the page, such as quotes from television speak and street talk. However, it is not hard to see that the emotional dominant of the collection are the elegiac poems (dedicated to the poet’s late mother) and above all the metaphysical ones – from amusing pastiches of “the poetry of the first Christians” to sonnets modelled on the best traditions of Baroque poetry.
