Czesław Miłosz

Travels in Time

Travels in Time includes portraits of people he has encountered during his long life. In one of the pieces Miłosz recalls a remark made by Simone Weil, whom he always esteemed, and once even translated: “Where is our regeneration to come from once we’ve corrupted and ravaged the earth? Only from the past, if we love it.” And he comments: “Our link with the past is a link with people who were once alive, and are coming back now in our memory or imagination.”
