Sławomir MrożekBalthazar. Autobiography Autobiography is related to Diary of a Return, published in 1996. This time Sławomir Mrożek describes what happened in his life up to 2005. The first, very short part of the book is about the period from 1990 to 1996 and Mexico, where Mrożek and his wife lived from 1989. The second part describes his childhood until he left for Italy in 1963, and the third covers the years he spent in that country. From this book, among other things, the reader learns about Mrożek’s first days at school, his pre-war obsession with the Polish Army, the reasons why he suffers from “a general lack of adaptability” and the surprise of his popularity on returning to Poland. His memoirs are told with his inimitable sense of humour. Autobiography is also a testament to the victory of literature over illness – while working on the book he had to overcome the effects of a stroke. One of them was aphasia, in other words the loss of the ability to use language, in both speech and writing.
