Anda Rottenberg

Art in Poland 1945-2005

Art in Poland 1945-2005 is not just an ordinary reference book. Art historian, critic, curator and pillar of the Polish art world for the past twenty-five years, Anda Rottenberg sums up Polish art and the Polish art scene of the past sixty years, not only telling us the history of contemporary art in Poland, but also teaching us how to look at it and how to understand new trends in art. She does it with ease, because for many years she has contributed to efforts aimed at breaking down public indifference or downright hostility towards contemporary art. She is not only highly knowledgeable about its complex issues, but is also able to speak and write about it convincingly, as well as to promote and explain it. Rottenberg describes the course of developments in Polish art not in an abstract way, but in relation to real life over the past half-century. Above all she shows how contemporary art has changed, and presents the artists who have brought something new to it. This book organises all the currents, movements, leading personalities and alternative trends in Polish art into a whole, with a logical sequence. And although Rottenberg does not hide her personal likes and preferences, she gives an objective view of the entire panorama of trends in art. Written with passion, and including a wealth of illustrations, this book is already the essential compendium of knowledge on Polish art in the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first century. As one of its reviewers has noted, it is really a narrative in which Rottenberg displays the wonders of Polish art in a lively style. “Far from being a standard description of currents and movements in art, this book guides us through the most interesting trends in painting, sculpture and art that uses new media.”

Piotr Sarzyński, Polityka (1/2006)
