Dorota Maslowska in US

Celebrated and controversial writer Dorota Maslowska will appear at the Brooklyn Book Festival on September 12, 2010. After appearing at the Brooklyn Book Festival, Maslowska will be in residence at Ledig House, a writers' colony situated in the Hudson River Valley town of Omi, New York. She is the author of the Polityka Passport Prize-winning novel Snow White and Russian Red (2002), now translated into several languages including English, and The Queen's Peacock (2005), winner of Poland's highest literary award, the Nike Prize for best book. Her dramas, Two Poor Polish-Speaking Romanians (2006) and No Matter How Hard We Tried (2009) commissioned by one of the best Polish theater companies, TR Warszawa, have been performed in Poland, London, Berlin, Prague, Moscow, Chicago, and Stockholm, and a New York staging of Two Poor Polish-Speaking Romanians is planned for the Abrons Arts Center at the Henry Street Settlement in February 2011.

Created in 1992, the Ledig House International Writers Residency is named after the German publisher Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt, known for his excellent literary judgment and for having published a long list of internationally famous writers in German translation. In its short history, Ledig House has hosted hundreds of writers and translators from roughly 50 countries. Its program's strong international emphasis reflects the spirit of cultural exchange that is part of Ledig's enduring legacy. Up to 20 poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators can be accommodated during each session and have opportunities to share ideas and to meet with New York City publishing professionals. Ledig House has previously hosted Polish writer, Olga Tokarczuk, who will visit the U.S. for a reading tour in November 2010.

Following her residency, The Ohio State University Slavic Department will host a symposium on October 8, 2010 with Dorota Maslowska to discuss her novel, Snow White and Russian Red, and for a screening of Xawery Zulawski's popular 2009 film based on the novel. For further details click here.
