A Polish Writer Makes Finalist for the European Book Prize

Anna Bikont’s "We from Jedwabne" has advanced to the final round of this year’s edition of the European Book Prize Award in the essay category. Polish reportage has already once been awarded by the jury – two years ago, Mariusz Szczygieł won for his "Gottland".

In early November, the jury headed by British writer Julian Barnes set out five candidates for the main award. In the essay category, the Polish author was joined by "Aux frontières de l’Europe" by Paolo Rumiza of Italy. In the novel category nominations went to: Maxim Leo of Germany for "Histoire d’un allemand de l’est", Ignacio Martinez de Pisón of Spain for "El dia de mañana", and Hugo Hamilton of Ireland for "Je ne suis pas d’ici".

The announcement of the winner and the award ceremony will take place on 7 December in Brussels, in the presence of the European Parliament and European Commission, Jerzy Buzek and José Manuela Barroso. Another guest of the ceremony will be Tadeusz Mazowiecki.

The French edition of Anna Bikont’s book was published early this year under the title "Le crime et le silence: Jedwabne 1941, la mémoire d'un pogrom dans la Pologne d'aujourd'hui" by Denoël Publishers. The translation is courtesy of Anna Hurwic.

The European Book Prize, which aims to promote European values and knowledge about the EU countries, is given out every year by a jury of journalists from various countries of the European Union. One member is Tomasz Bielecki of Gazeta Wyborcza. Winners receive 10,000 euros.
