Anna Bikont Receives the European Book Prize


Anna Bikont’s "We from Jedwabne" was honored with this year’s European Book Prize Award. The book was awarded in the essay category by a jury led by British writer Julian Barnes.

"We from Jedwabne" came about after four years of journalistic work, probing witnesses of the crimes in Jedwabne, verifying recollections, searching for documents from decades past, noting statements of historians and press polemics.

The French edition of the book appeared in 2010 under the title "Le Crime et le Silence: Jedwabne 1941, la memoire d'un pogrom dans la Pologne d'aujourd'hui". It was published by Denoel Publishers. The translator is Anna Hurwic.

Bikont beat Italian writer Paolo Rumiz, who was nominated in the same category for "Aux frontieres de l'Europe. In the field of belles lettres", the German Maxim Leo received an award for the book "Haltet euer Herz bereit: Eine ostdeutsche Familiengeschichte".

The names of the winners were announced on 7 December during a ceremony at the European Parliament, attended by European Commission Head Jose Barroso European Presidency Head Jerzy Buzek. Premier Tadeusz Mazowiecki was also among the guests.

The aim of this annual prize is to promote European values and knowledge about the countries of the European Union. It is awarded by a jury composed of over a dozen journalists from various EU countries – regular correspondents in Brussels. In 2011 one member of the jury was Tomasz Bielecki of Gazeta Wyborcza. The winners receive 10,000 euros apiece.
