Korczak Year Begins

In 2012 we will have two important anniversaries connected with Janusz Korczak – the 70th anniversary of his death in the concentration camp in Treblinka, and the 100th anniversary of the orphanage he founded on Krochmalna Street in Warsaw. In September, Parliament declared 2012 Janusz Korczak Year.

Many initiatives associated with Korczak are planned for this year to promote his legacy – cultural, informative, and educational. There are also plans to publish two currently out-of-print titles by Korczak: "How to Love a Child" and "A Child’s Right to Respect".

Initiatives tied to Korczak are being planned by the majority of departments: the Ministry of National Education has declared that this year’s Parliament of Children and Youth – organized annually on Children’s Day – will be devoted to Korczak, the Ministry of the Infrastructure has announced the publication of a postage stamp with Korczak’s picture, the Ministry of Health intends to promote the rights of children as patients, and the Central Sanitation Unit will remind us that Korczak was a precursor in children’s and young people’s hygiene. The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage intends to join in the ceremonies, in part through its institutions: the Book Institute, which holds the rights to Korczak’s works, the Theater Institute, the National Library etc. Warsaw’s City Hall has announced the coming renovation of the orphanage on Jaktorowska Street. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to promote Poland through Korczak in all its diplomatic centers. Once a month every embassy is to put an essay on Korczak on its web page.

European Council Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg has suggested collaborating to promote Korczak’s message all across Europe. He has put forward the idea to undertake the translation of Korczak’s works and to publish them in other countries. He has also committed himself to showing an exhibition at the European Council headquarters in Strasbourg which will be prepared for the Korczak Year.

The festivities will also be joined by the academic community and non-governmental organizations.

Crowning Korczak Year will be the Korczak Congress, organized by the Children’s Rights Spokesperson.
