An accessible but ambitiously crafted romance for adolescents. A fairly simple love story takes on multiple significances through incidents involving the magic of the theatre, fortunetelling, and old family secrets. The growth of romantic feelings (and the associated intrigues) are laid out in an interesting way, and end in vows, mystery and unexpected riches symbolized by the "pearl" of the title. Intriguing character sketches and subtle allusions to the poetics of the Gothic novel make this an original and attractive book for the romantically inclined of all ages. Perly Damy Pik (The Queen of Spades' Pearls) was recently re-issued as a work of "magical realism."
