We can now safely call it a tradition – Polish books have once again found themselves in the winner's circle at the BolognaRagazzi Awards! Previous years have seen awards given to Iwona Chmielewska and Marta Ignerska, among others - this year Jewish Association Czulent was honored for Majn alef bejs by Jehoszue Kamiński, illustrated by Urszula Palusińska. The astonishingly rendered alphabet for these Yiddish poems, we read in the jury statement, at once received the unanimous recognition of the chapter as the unchallenged winner in this category.

Majn Alef Bejs presents the Jewish alphabet with rhymes. It was published as part of the A Majse series, alongside a counting book and poems that present the basics of the most important Jewish holidays.

Urszula Palusińska (1984) graduated from the Graphics Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where she lives and works today. She illustrates books for children and makes animated films. Her graduation project, entitled Something of the Kind, won the People's Choice Award at the OFAFA Animated Film Festival in Krakow. Her illustrations for Majn Alef Bejs also received honorary mentions at the PS IBBY Book of the Year awards and a special mention at the Lisbon Illustration Biennale (ILUSTRARTE).

The BolognaRagazzi Award is the most prestigious prize in the world for children's book illustrations. The competition has been organized for many years through the Book Fair for Children and Young People in Bologna. The participants include the most beautiful children's books from around the world. The international jury evaluates, above all, the graphic and editorial virtues of the publications in five categories: Fiction, Non Fiction, Opera Prima (for debuts, for discovering new talents), New Horizons (a section for the Arabic countries, Latin America, Asia, and Africa), and Digital (apps). This year over 1,000 books were submitted from forty-two countries. The award ceremony will be held on the first day of the fair – on 24 March, 2014.
