Library with Distinction
About the programme
The Library with Distinction project is aimed at independent public libraries and local-government cultural institutions that run public libraries and are organised by rural, urban-rural and urban municipalities.
The initiative is an expanded and revised version of the Library Ranking, which has been run since 2011, including by the Book Institute. The project aims to showcase the diverse and important work public libraries do today and recognise those that are particularly effective in responding to residents’ needs.
The project seeks to identify leading libraries at both national and regional level. Awards will be presented in categories based on municipal population: up to 20,000 residents; between 20,000 and 100,000 residents; and over 100,000 residents. This approach will make it possible to fairly recognise the achievements of libraries operating in different circumstances, while sharing good practices and encouraging institutions to learn from one another.
The assessment will cover areas including library facilities and management, the number of users, the quality of collections, the availability and development of library services, staff working conditions, and support provided by the organising municipality. Another important part of the project will be highlighting inspiring initiatives by libraries in promoting reading, preventing social exclusion, introducing innovative solutions, supporting staff development, and making their services more accessible to all audiences.
Library with Distinction is not just about rewarding the best. Above all, the project aims to inspire, promote good practices and show how modern libraries contribute to the development of local communities. We believe that showcasing leading libraries will encourage the continued development of the public library sector throughout Poland.
