About the magazine
This journal’s tradition goes back to the inter-war period – it is an extension of the Bal u lal monthly, published at the time by Jan Izydor Sztaudynger. After the war, it was released periodically, though intermittently, from 1950 to the 1970s. It was reactivated in 1982 as a quarterly, and since 1996 it has been in Polish and English versions, becoming a periodical of international scope. It is distributed by subscription, sold at EMPIK stores, sent to libraries, study centres and art institutes, art schools, and the world’s UNIMA centres. It is acknowledged in the theatre world and enjoys a high opinion both for its content and editorial standards.
For several years now, Teatr Lalek has moved beyond strictly issues in puppet theatre, broadening its focus to include visual theatre, alternative, independent and object theatre, visual art, literature and a readership beyond the puppet community. Its contributors include critics and theatre scholars who are not professionally attached to puppetry. In recent years, the editors have emphasised collaboration with young theatre critics. Articles in Teatr Lalek are also written by foreign authors.
The editors arrange the articles in several sections: Essays, Festivals, Reviews, World News, Profiles, Anniversaries, Recollections, Interviews, The Author’s Desk, Publications, Exhibitions, Schooling, Dramaturgy and Opinion Columns.
