The Adam Wodnicki scholarship

The Adam Wodnicki scholarship, founded in tribute to this great visual artist, translator of French literature and writer, supports French-Polish translators or those working on translations of books on art from any language into Polish. The scholarship is funded by the Book Institute.

As part of the scholarship programme, the Book Institute will support the stay of a chosen person at the Translator’s College in Krakow – the Institute’s residency house for visiting writers and translators at Wróblewskiego Street 2 in Krakow.

Adam Wodnicki (1930–2020) – a full art professor, long-time teacher, dean and vice-rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was a translator of French literature, mainly poetry. His translations included works by Saint-John Perse, Yves Bonnefoy, Edmond Jabès, Julien Gracq, and the prose of Patrick Roegiers and Simone Weil. He was twice a recipient of the Literatura na Świecie quarterly award and the ZaiKS Award. He was a founding member of the Cap à l’Est International Association of French-Language Poets of Central and Eastern Europe – co-organiser of a European festival of poetry, theatre and music. He is the author of: ‘Notatki z Prowansji’ (Notes from Provence, 2011), ‘Obrazki z krainy d’Oc’ (Pictures from the Land of d’Oc, 2012) and ‘Tryptyk oksytański’ (Occitan Triptych, 2014),
