In August 2026, Jacek Dukaj was a guest at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. The event dedicated to the English translation of the novel Ice, published by the AdAstra imprint (of Head of Zeus), also featured the translator Ursula Phillips, and was chaired by Uilleam Blacker.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival took place from 17 to 19 August. It is one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Nearly 600 authors from 41 countries took part.

The main topic of the discussion with Jacek Dukaj and Ursula Phillips was transferring the author’s sophisticated Polish – full of neologisms and archaisms – into English. The translator worked on the translation for ten years.

The Institute funded the attendance of Jacek Dukaj and Ursula Phillips at the festival.

For the translation of Ice, Ursula Philipps received the Found in Translation Award, and Dukaj’s novel itself met with excellent reception in the United Kingdom.
